Dismantling of Institutional Safeguards since 1994

Ratepayer Associations and Property Owners' Associations, are increasingly forced to play the role of Parliament, the Auditor-General, the police, and even the National Treasury in order to ensure that government follow the law: Our research on what happened after 1994 when the ANC came into power. Specifically, we investigate how senior political leaders — including State Presidents — weakened or dismantled the institutional systems that were originally designed to protect public funds from corruption and misuse by government officials. We analyze the root causes of the problem and provide practical advice on how ordinary, hardworking, tax‑paying community members can help fix the current situation.
