The roles and responsibilities of a Ward Councillor are prescribed by the Local Government: Municipal Structures Act, 1998 (Act No. 117 of 1998) and the Local Government: Municipal Systems Act, 2000 (Act No. 32 of 2000). Key duties include:

•Participating in the proceedings of the municipal council and its committees.

•Representing the interests of the ward in the municipal council.

•Monitoring the performance of the municipality and holding it to account for its service delivery obligations.

•Communicating council decisions to the ward community.

•Facilitating the development of the ward as part of the municipality's Integrated Development Plan (IDP).
